Me Made May from Stitch and Yarn

Today marks the beginning of Me Made May. I’ve never participated before, as watching it on Instragram, it seemed the purpose was to wear something different that you’d made, every day, for a month. My autumn/winter wardrobe doesn’t extend to 31 different outfits, let alone my handmade one.

To be fair, I have started to sew clothing again in the last year or two, I’ve knitted a couple of items for myself, and I happen to be doing an open sewing class during May this year, so it prompted me to take another look at ...

The Treehouse Hexagon Quilt Project from Red Pepper Quilts

The Treehouse Hexagon Quilt Project © Red Pepper Quilts 2022 #hexagonquilt #englishpaperpieced

My first official finished quilt for 2022 and my goodness, I so love everything about this quilt. It is of course another slow sewing project - English paper pieced - a process that continues to hold all of my attention. Hexagons especially are a favorite. I know they're not for everyone, as they can be tedious to piece with lots of stop/start seams. But I just love them, I could sew hexagons all day, every day right now.

Modern Hexagon Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt
Modern Hexagon Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Hexies are my favorite! I keep coming back to this shape for English paper piecing, and even though the hexagon shape doesn't lend itself to continuous piecing - there's a lot of stop/start sewing - I still love it. Hexies are so versatile, the layout possibilities are endless, and with the right mix of fabric you can have a traditional quilt with a modern feel.

All the Stars Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

All the Stars Quilt - English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

I am on a roll - another week and another new quilt to show you, this one too was started and finished in 2021. I love all sorts of quilts, from modern quilts to art quilts - I can appreciate them all - but traditional scrappy quilts steal my heart every time. I have had this quilt, a classic 6-pointed star quilt, on my quilting buckets lists for quite some time, and am pleased to have now ticked it off.

The June Dyson Coverlet from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt

June Dyson Coverlet - Handmade Patchwork Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Continuing this week with another 2021 finished quilt. This quilt is June Dyson Coverlet; a pattern by Emma from Treehouse Textiles in Mornington (not far from Melbourne, in fact the perfect day trip from Melbourne, and a fabric store truly worthy of visiting in person!). Emma has a unique eye for pattern and fabric/color placement and her quilts and patterns are on my quilting bucket list.

Talula Quilt ~ A Finished Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

Talula Quilt ~ English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts November2021

It's time for a blog update! I have been busy sewing, but have - hopefully temporarily - lost my blogging momentum. Here in Melbourne we've had a LOT of home time due to local lockdown and covid restrictions, and as such I have had much time to sit, sew, and reflect. Some days and weeks have been more productive than others, but there seems to be a light at the end of a slow long Winter. It's almost Summer and it feels like we're heading into the good (and jolly) season. This week I took some time to ...

Ice Cream Soda Quilt - English Paper Piecing from Red Pepper Quilts

 A Finished Quilt

Another bucket list quilt! This is my Ice Cream Soda Quilt, a pattern by Jodi from Tales of Cloth. The Ice Cream Soda Quilt is an English Paper pieced quilt. According to my phone photos I started this quilt early January 2021. I took very few progress photos but I do have this snap of my cut and basted pieces, organised by block.

I cut and basted all of the pieces prior to piecing (other than my initial test blocks), using many of my favorite fabrics, and relying on my intuition and a bit of luck in ...

Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt.

Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt ® Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Here's one that I made earlier! I finished this quilt top back in March of this year. It seems like only yesterday, and also a lifetime ago. Back then we were living in a covid "normal" world where you could leave your home and visit friends and family. Right now, we're back in a covid lockdown situation whilst we wait for the largely unvaccinated population to get vaccinated. There is plenty of time to sew, and I have been taking advantage of that, plus this week I have dusted off my camera and taken photos ...

B is for Blues ~ A Hexagon Quilt | Part 3 from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt

B is for Blues ~ A finished Hexagon Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2020 #patchworkquilt

Next on my to-do list was to finish this English paper pieced hexagon quilt. I started this quilt top in October 2018 and finished it in December 2018. Since then the quilt top has remained untouched, although not forgotten, as quilting it was put in my mental too hard basket. I am not sure what it was that caused me such anxiety; maybe it was the fact that I had spent so much time fussy cutting the fabrics and English paper piecing the many hexies, or even the mix of fabric bases ~ quilting cotton and cotton/linen ...

English Paper Piecing (EPP) was what kept me busy not only for the month of March, but also the month of April. I haven't kept a stitching diary and the days, weeks, and quilts have blurred, but my Instagram account tells me that the last seam for this quilt top was completed during the first week of May 2020.

After the Storm, at Dusk from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I've finally completed this little art quilt. This one started out with the frame. I had one that Richard had made but I'd measured incorrectly, so it was just sitting, waiting for something. This sunset is my rendition of a photo I took one evening after a rainstorm.

I wanted to emphasize the contrast of dark and light clouds. To do that I broke up the light sky with deep, royal purples and blues.

And to add some shimmer to the light clouds, I tacked on a shiny organza, which was a difficult, messy chore.

And so there ...

A Warm Hearted Quilt - English Paper Piecing from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt

English Paper Piecing (EPP) has kept my hands busy and my mind at ease during the long and frightful pandemic days that were the month of March 2020. We will surely never forget these days. I really do enjoy EPP and can happily spend hours basting papers and whip stitching. The quilt top - pictured above - was started and completed during the month of March, then quilted and bound in April.

A Hand Pieced Trip Around the World Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt
A Hand Pieced Trip Around the World Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2020

When I say things are slowly returning to "normal" I mean super slowly ... like snail paced ... but I am good with it. I am embracing slow and as well as being keen to learn new techniques. This quilt is entirely hand pieced. Hand pieced as in - - - - - running stitch with needle, thimble, and thread.

It turns out that I can do slow, I can hand piece and sew secure seams; the quilt top did not fall apart when I picked it up, nor when I pressed the seams! In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed hand piecing the quilt top ...

North Bayou Des Glaises ~~ finished! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I finally have a finish that I can show you. This is a small hand quilted art piece that I started weeks ago. I should have finished last week, as planned, but bipolar depression can get in the way of lots of should haves. Anyway, it's finished now and I love it.

It is Bayou Des Glaises at Bordino Crossing. Bordino Crossing is the bridge that is closest to my late grandmother's old home place. She died in 1991 and I still think of her and miss her. I'd worked on another piece with a part of ...

A Finished Quilt!

I am so pleased to have finished my Scrappy Hexagon Quilt. One inch hexagons are the best! They are just the right size to comfortably hold together in your hand while stitching, and the scrappy patchwork fabric created by the use of ALL the fabrics is rather delicious. I do so love a scrappy quilt! I estimate to have used 250+ different fabrics and many hexagon pieces have been fussy cut to feature a fabric design element. There's a lot to see! The perfect I-Spy Quilt.
